How to Choose a Practice Management System

I know from experience how difficult it is for busy law departments to choose and implement practice management systems. The vendors are usually more than willing to talk with you and help you, but you probably want to do some screening before you start working with any vendors. One approach is to hire an experienced consultant to help you. Whether you decide to work with a consultant or go it alone, it never hurts to be armed with as much information as possible. Here are some resources:

Andy Adkins, at the University of Florida's Legal Technology Institute, has written a book called Computerized Case Management Systems - Choosing and Implementing the Right Software for You. It was published by the ABA Section of Law Practice Management. You can see selected portions and order it here. I believe it was published in 1998, so I don't know how current the information is.

Andy Adkins' 10 Tips for Successfully Implementing Case Management Systems

There is some good information available from CLS/Summit. Go to their website, select Services - Top 20 Tips.
