Automated Auditing of Outside Counsel BillingA story on Law.com on April 18, 2001, indicates that some of the country's largest insurance companies, which had been using third-party legal-bill auditing services in earlier years, are stopping that practice. The companies found that the auditing process, although it saved money, was a disaster for their relationship with outside counsel. Some of the companies are starting to use software to do the auditing. The use of software alleviates the concern about the loss of confidentiality when information is turned over to a third party, and should result in less interference with the professional judgment of outside counsel.
