Optical Character Recognition (OCR)

Optical character recognition, usually referred to as OCR, is the process by which images (e.g., a copy of a document or a fax) are automatically converted to a format that can be electronically read, manipulated, and searched (e.g., a Word or WordPerfect document). For more detailed information, see this article from ABBYY Software House.

ABBYY Fine Reader is an excellent and affordable ($100) OCR program.
